Guidelines
for supplying your own artwork on disk for lithographic printing.
PLEASE
READ CAREFULLY – If you have any questions, please ask before you start
your job.
Hard
copy proof
If possible, please supply a hard copy proof of your job. This can be
a printout from your desktop printer, a fax, or a PDF or JPG. It does
not have to be colour accurate, or even in colour. We will use it to
check that, when the file is opened on our systems, all the fonts have
been recognised and everything is correctly positioned.
Scans
& Images
Photo scans should be at 400dpi at the size in your document. Line art
should be scanned at 1200dpi. Try to stick to TIF or EPS format to retain
maximum definition.
Colours
If your job is full colour, please ensure that you work entirely in
CMYK. Do NOT use RGB, Pantone or colours which are specific to the program
you are using. Similarly, if your job is spot colour, only use those
spot colours. Do not rely on screen representation of colours. Refer
to printed CMYK or Pantone sheets for colour selection (we have these
available at our shop). Please do NOT apply any colour profiles to images
as these will almost certainly not match those required for our presses.
If your program does not support CMYK or Pantone, we can often convert
your colours before printing. Please discuss this with us when ordering
(and see File Checking below). Some programs (e.g. Microsoft Word and
PowerPoint) do not support CMYK or professional Spot Colour choices.
We can work with these files but the colours will need converting before
we go to press – our charges for File Checking and Correction below
will apply. If you are concerned about specific colour matching – for
a house colour company logo, for example – please discuss this with
us.
Fonts
We keep 1000’s of Mac and PC fonts but it is always a good idea to supply
them just in case.
Layout
Supply work 1-up and set your page size to the actual size of the finished
product. If any images bleed (go right to the edge of the sheet), extend
them off your page by 3mm. Text, boxes and other areas you need on the
page should ideally be at least 5mm in from the edge to allow for slight
movement when trimming.
File
Checking and Correction
We can check your file to see that you have set everything correctly,
and carry out any necessary conversion. Our minimum charge for this
is £10. For work involving a large number of pages and/or images etc,
we may need to quote you an additional charge.
PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU DO NOT REQUEST
THIS CHECK, WE WILL ASSUME THAT
YOUR FILES ARE ‘PRESS-READY’. IF YOU ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH PROFESSIONAL
PRINTING PROCESSES,
PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOU ASK FOR THIS CHECK.
Prices do not include
artwork – please ask for an estimate if required. All prices are subject
to VAT if applicable. E&OE
